Delivery Robots Are Now Helping Blind Pedestrians Navigate City Sidewalks
Los Angeles-based Coco Robotics is partnering with BlindSquare, the world's most widely used GPS app for the visually impaired, to share real-time sidewalk hazard data with blind pedestrians. As Coco's fleet of ~1,000 delivery robots navigate city streets, they continuously log obstacles like fallen e-scooters and broken curb cuts. That data now flows directly into BlindSquare, which converts it into spoken alerts in 26 languages, warning users about hazards roughly 10 meters ahead.
The partnership launches across six cities: Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Jersey City, Helsinki, and Turku, and includes a two-way feedback loop where BlindSquare users can report when an obstacle has been cleared, updating Coco's routing maps in return.
It's a compelling example of infrastructure built for one purpose unlocking unexpected value for another, in this case, robots built to dodge obstacles becoming a lifeline for people who can't see what's ahead.
